Around the Area
The Highwood Mountain Range is a popular destination among hikers and campers. The island of mountains sits at the northern end of the Lewis and Clark National Forest. Thain Creek Campground sits at an elevation of 4,700 feet with a dozen primitive campsites. Nearby Briggs Creek and Thain Creek provide ample opportunities to fish for brook and rainbow trout. A popular hike is up to Windy Mountain and back along the six-mile loop trail.
Beginning at the west end of town, the Highwood Bike-n-Walk Trail crosses Highwood Creek over the Wendel Mee Memorial Bridge and then makes its way through the small town of Highwood. Completed in the summer of 2016, this trail was a community effort and provides a safe route for pedestrians and bicyclists. There are park benches along the trail as well as picnic tables and restrooms.
Locals frequent Elmo’s Highwood Bar, a hidden gem that is famous for its Friday Night Steak Night, which sells out every week. Reservations are needed a few days before, but are well worth the wait. In addition to steak, it has juicy burgers and hot sandwiches, all served with its famous hot slaw. The owners are friendly and frequently visit with guests to be sure they are more than satisfied with their meal.
The annual Shonkin Country Christmas takes place every December at the Shonkin Community Hall in Highwood. This unique community gathering is where vendors showcase their arts and crafts, home-baked desserts, candies, antiques and collectables. They serve fresh huckleberry rolls for breakfast and a variety of soups, stews and chili for lunch. If the weather permits, they offer sleigh rides pulled by Clydesdale horses.
